Part 2: Chapters 10-19 Question 33

They examine the dirty needle hypothesis. Name two other infectious diseases spread
through dirty needles?

3 comments:

  1. The dirty needle hypothesis suggests that when organisms “share needles and other drug equipment viruses” (Needle Dangers) can be drawn up into the syringe and injected into the other organisms. The infected blood is transferred from the organism through the infected blood. The reason the scientist questioned the dirty needle hypothesis is because “the Ebola virus had spread in Zaïre through dirty needles” (Preston, 1994, p. 241). HIV is another virus that intra emitted through dirty needles. HIV is transmitted when “an infected persons blood other bodily fluid comes in contact with the blood, broken skin, or mucous membranes of an uninfected person” (Needle Dangers). Although it was presumed that 95% of all cases of HIV transmission were sexual, it turns out that 12% of cases happen because of dirty needles. Hepatitis C is anther virus that is transmitted through dirty needles. Hepatitis C is a liver disease. The most common way of Hepatitis C transmission is “by sharing needles and other equipment” (Hepatitis c Causes: Sharing Drug Needles, Transfusions, and More). Prior to 1992, people could get “Hepatitis C through blood transfusions androgen transplants” (Hepatitis c Causes: Sharing Drug Needles, Transfusions, and More).

  2. Hi Zunera, with Ebola dirty needles were used because there was a lack of medical supplies and equipment. What contributes to the use of dirty needles in the case of HIV and Hepatitis?

  3. Zunera is correct when she explains the two different infectious diseases and how they are caused by infected needles once they are shared through organisms. Another diseases can simply be from a small cold or flu as, like Zunera explained, to Hepatitis or other more complex diseases. Another disease can by Syphilis which is a very dangerous disease that is transmitted the same way that HIV is transimitted. Syphilis is also sexually transmitted and begins with a painless sore that leads, to most cases, death. Syphilis is not as dangerous as HIV now that their is treatment but if not treated early when the first symptoms start showing, then it can be very deadly.
