Part 2: Chapters 10-19 Question 28

Why is it important to know how the viruses spread?

  1. Understanding the method of spreading for a virus helps prevent more oubreaks in certain cases. If the virus is airborne, then not much is possible because the virus spreads easily. If the virus spreads through bodily fluids, then quarantining the infected people will stop its spread as well as any one who they physically contacted because they may be the original source. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CDC, has a list of safety measures to help prevent the spread of ebola, such as don’t touch the dead body of a person who had ebola, and to answer questions the public have on the outbreak. The method of spreading a virus usually determines the host’s vulnerability to the virus as the host is less vulnerable the more easily spread the virus because the virus spreads to many people and will eventually infect an unlucky victim; however, the host is more vulnerable the less easily spread the virus because the virus must infect its next victim or it probabky won’t infect another from its lack of spreadabilty. The less easily spread virus usually “attack” the victim more agressively as well, as the HIV virus does more damage to its victim than the influenza virus.

    1. Hi Angel, compare how many deaths are cause by HIV verses Influenza. Please include statistics. Do you still think HIV does more damage than Influenza? Explain or defend your answer.

  2. As Angel explained, to know how viruses spread is key in preventing an outbreak because they can find ways to create safety measures in which the virus can not spread violently. It is necessary to find out how a virus is spread to also continue in the research to get information and to expand the knowledge of the virus. After scientists figure out how the virus is spread wether it is transmitted or airborne, they will now be able to find easier and more useful ways to attack the deadly virus. Without the knowledge of how a virus is spread then there are more risks that the virus will continue to spread and without it, there is no way you can stop the long-term complication between those specific diseases/ viruses.

  3. It is crucial to understand the methods viruses use to spread from host to host. As both Angel and Bryan mentioned, knowing this information is important to prevent viruses from spreading and causing an epidemic. One additional and crucial point is that understanding viruses more aids scientists in keeping them from spreading while experiments are being performed. Viruses cannot be tested on if they will be spreading throughout each and every room and human. Precautionary measures must be taken into consideration, so the more that is known of the virus, the better. Scientists need to find out how to kill the virus once and for all, or simply succeed in creating a vaccine (Preston, 1994).
