A thread virus, also known as filovirus, is a family of viruses that the Marburg virus is lumped into. They are called “thread virus” because “they resemble no other virus on Earth… [like] strands of tangled rope” (Preston 35). They are not like other viruses because others are shaped like small spherical particles. The filovirus family includes the Marburg and Ebola, Marburg being the mildest despite its frightening effects. There are five known species of Ebola: Tai Forest, Sudan, Zaire, Reston, and Bundibugyo. Ebola Reston is the species of ebola that causes the least severe damage to humans but is fatal to other organisms. Filovirus virions are structured with one molecule of negative sense RNA and are covered in a “lipid (fatty) membrane” (Center for Disease Control 2013). It was first identified in 1967 and named after the site of its outbreak, Marburg, Germany. Recent studies point to the African fruit bats as the origins of the filovirus, the Marburg specifically from the Rousettus bats in Uganda. It is transmitted most effectively through exchanges of body fluids between two people. Some symptoms of the thread virus include hemorrhagic fevers, nausea, headaches, chills, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Once the host is infected, treating the viral symptoms becomes difficult. Isolating the patient is the only known successful way to prevent the spread and contraction of the virus.
To add on to Hanna’s explanation on thread viruses (filoviruses), these viruses are actually the most currently potent pathogens currently known to affect humans. This is mainly due to their quick adaptations that allow them to infect and kill many different types of somatic cells. Most significantly they are able to infect the human immune system and destroy the host from the inside out. This comes in the form of hemorrhagic fever which kills in just by destroying the immune system: blood clots form, blood vessels weaken, and due to a weak immune system, there is no strong immune response. This is mainly due because filoviruses work in cause immune system cells to “apoptose, or self-destruct, and can send the body into shock.” (Filoviridae, 2015).

The virus that is a member of Mononegaviralis is a member of the family Filoviridae. Some of the characteristics of filovirus include: a viral hemorrhagic fever in certain primates, “it exclusively replicates in the cytoplasm of a host” (Filoviridae, 2014) cell. The virus transmission cause is unknown. There is no known effective treatment for the hemorrhagic fevers caused by Filoviruses.
